Curt Deming, Teaching Pastor:

Week 52 of 52 Hebrew Words Every Christian Should Know by Dave Adamson: “Halal (haw-lal’)” = to shine.  Our word “halo” comes from the root of this Hebrew word. The Greeks translated it as “phaneros” which means “to shine inside.” The idea is that the light is reflected, and we shine it by responding to the revealed light of God’s truth. I believe this is what Jesus meant when he said in Matthew 5:16

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Is it week 52 already? This is what I call painting myself into a corner of accountability. If there is something that I want to do, but I’m not sure if I have the discipline to follow through on my own, I will create a situation where it would embarrass me if I do not finish. As expected, there were weeks this year when learning a new Hebrew word felt like an unnecessary chore, but at the end of the year, I am glad we did this. I learned some new things that have been useful in my own discipleship, and we may hear some of these words again on Sunday mornings as we study the Old Testament.

MCC News:

Wheels for the Strunas! Thank you for pitching in on this effort with your prayer and more. I hope we can publish some preliminary numbers soon.

Ash Wednesday was February 17th. My preference for the Lenten season is not to give up something, but rather to take on something. Last year, we learned something new, and it lasted long after Easter. This year, I prefer to read two other Gospels to focus on Jesus between now and Easter. There is a reading calendar on the MCC website and also in last week’s fb post. My version of the calendar has a catch up day on Sundays so it’s not too late to join us for this year (See a 2021 Lentin Bible Reading Plan and bookmark on the MCC website blog page at this link.)

Speaking of prayer, please pray about City Fest. You do not need for me to reiterate the reasons for attending or not attending this event in person on March 6-7. However, I encourage all in our congregation to access the prayer resources of our church. There are prayer cards in our foyer and virtual versions on our website. I hope and believe that strategic prayer can be and should be an institutional habit at MCC.

I have a few more boxes to check before it is official, but I hope to return to church on Sunday mornings before Easter. I will keep you posted when I have a firm date.

Please join us for worship at Melbourne Community Church this weekend, however you can. The live service begins at 9:00 AM, and it is live streamed on our YouTube channel. The full service is available on our website after that.

Our “virtual foyer” Zoom meeting is a group of attenders who connect briefly (about 45 minutes) after the worship service. Newcomers are always welcome. The new link for this semester is on the church website.

Curt Deming, Teaching Pastor:

Week 51 of 52 Hebrew Words Every Christian Should Know by Dave Adamson: “Mayim” = water. To better understand this word, we 21st century Florida kids need to put on our ancient goggles to consider how the ancients viewed water and large bodies of water. We enjoy our ocean and our rivers and lakes as playgrounds or at least beautiful scenery that makes it better to live here. For the ancients, the seas were associated with chaos, and they were feared. Yet the Spirit of God hovered over the waters (mayim) in Genesis 1:2, and some of the most dramatic miracles in Scripture highlight our Lord’s authority over the waters, like the Red Sea crossing and Jordan River crossing in the Old Testament and the exciting things Jesus did on the Sea of Galilee in the New Testament.

Although we do not fear the water like our ancient ancestors, we all face modern situations that threaten to become chaotic. Like the ancients, we can trust the one who continues to hover over us, throughout the Bible and through all of human history.

MCC News:

Thank you to all who helped with the memorial service for Steve Boytis. I heard from Andrea and Carol afterwards, and they and the family were appreciative.

Happy Valentine’s Day! This time last year I had no idea what was coming next, and the rest of the year was full of surprises. Among all of the other sadness of the last year, it’s a little sad that we will miss our Valentine’s Banquet in 2021, but that will just give our cooks an extra year to sharpen our skills and find the right recipe for next year. I hope and pray that we will be able to resume our Valentine’s Banquet in 2022.

Wheels for the Strunas! [The rest of this paragraph is a repeat of last week’s news.] About ten or twelve years ago, our congregation enjoyed the opportunity to sponsor a motorcycle for the Strunas. This year, I am hoping that we will be able to buy them two motorcycles (in addition to our routine support). We can do this in two stages since Sharon is still in Florida. Sharon’s Honduran commuting will not start until later in the spring. Chris lives at the orphanage where is already serving as school administrator, so he does not have to commute for daily work, but of course he will need a vehicle for other trips. The cost of a reliable, used motorcycle in their area is roughly $5000, so that is our target. I hope we can do this once in February and again in April. I will ask someone with art skills to make a chart for the wall of our foyer so we can track our progress. Please pray about how you might join this effort.

Ash Wednesday is February 17th. This year, I will publish a 40-day Bible reading calendar for those of you would like to join me in a devotional series to prepare for Easter. I will post the calendar in the comments below. I will not make daily posts about the readings. I would also ask our congregation to prepare for Easter by praying for those around you who need to hear the good news. Consider whom you might invite to church for the end of our Luke series, either virtually or in person.

I heard a rumor that I might be cleared (by all of those I submit to) to return to live Sunday morning worship services before Easter. Actually, I confess that I’m trying to start that rumor here. My plan is to continue to spread this rumor at my next doctor visit and see what happens. I’ll keep you posted.

Please join us for worship at Melbourne Community Church this weekend, however you can. The live service begins at 9:00 AM, and it is live streamed on our YouTube channel. The full service is available on our website after that.

Week 50 of 52 Hebrew Words Every Christian Should Know by Dave Adamson: “Shanah” = change. I have noticed that we tend to react well to the changes we can anticipate, like the changes in seasons or approaching holidays. I have often said that for teachers and students, “The calendar is our friend.” But sometimes we react negatively to the changes that highlight our lack of control, like many of then changes we all have endured over the past year. I hope it helps to know that we serve a God who does not change.

The prophet Malachi recorded these words from the Almighty, “I am the Lord, and I do not change” (Malachi 3:6). It is because of this firm foundation that the Lord’s people are empowered to endure the inevitable changes around us. And not only that, but we are also empowered to embrace the change that is necessary as disciples who are following Jesus.

Week 49 of 52: Hebrew Words Every Christian Should Know by Dave Adamson: “Ger” = refugee. This word shows up often in the Old Testament where it is also translated as “stranger” or “foreigner” or “immigrant.” Over thirty times in the Old Testament, the Lord’s people are told to love the “ger.” Sometimes these commands are included with the exhortation to look after the poor, the widows and the orphans. So love for the stranger is consistent with the principle that God’s people are called to show compassion for the most vulnerable among us.

I used to tell my high school students that learning to speak Spanish was one practical way for Florida kids to put this principle in action. I have a few stories where I had the opportunity to be a better neighbor because I could help bridge a language gap. You do not have to learn a new language to uphold this Biblical standard of compassion for the stranger. But we can all ask the Holy Spirit to make us more aware of the people and opportunities that are already around us.

MCC News:  The memorial service for Carol Brown is later this morning (Saturday) at 11:00 AM. This is not a traditional funeral at our building, but rather a zoom meeting hosted by Libby, Carol’s friend and advocate. Many of our congregation had the opportunity to meet Libby as she helped organize do-gooder events at Carol’s home after the stroke. I posted a link to the zoom meeting on the MCC Facebook page Friday, but I can add the link in the comments below in case that makes it easier to find.
